The curb ramp opening can be aligned with the curb line (left) or more directionally oriented to the crosswalk (right). Edges shall have a minimum radius of 1/8 inch. Curb ramps must be oriented so that the grade break is perpendicular to the curb ramp run to ensure a smooth transition to streets, including at corners with a wide radius.

The handrail shall be free of any sharp or abrasive elements. The diameter of the gripping surface of the handrail shall be 1 1/4 to 1 1/2 inches, or the shape shall provide an equivalent surface. The top of the handrail surface shall be placed between 34 and 38 inches above the ramp's finished floor surface. Surfaces of the handrail shall be continuous without interruption or obstructions. When the handrail is located in a recess, it must be at least three inches deep and shall extend at least 18 inches above the top of the rail. Punched and grooved surface improves traction and will not collect mud, snow or debris. or wider, the flared sides of the ramp will have a maximum slope of 1V:10H (10). A clear space of 1 1/2 inches must be provided between the handrail and the wall where the handrail is installed. Three end types available: Center Pin, Double Pin, and Double Hook. If a curb ramp is located where pedestrians may walk across the ramp, or the ramp is not protected by handrails, guardrails, or a permanent obstacle, and the landing or the sidewalk at the top of the ramp is 4 ft. When a handrail is not continuous, handrails shall extend at least 12 inches beyond the top and bottom segment and must be parallel with the floor and/or ground surface. 
The inside handrail on switchbacks shall always be continuous. It is a walkway that lets people walk between two levels or landing places on a gradual slope.
